New Hyundai i20 will be featured at the Auto Expo 2018. It will get a new CVT gearbox and a 1.2L petrol engine; The current 1.4L petrol mill likely to be discontinued.
New Hyundai i20 is all set to make its debut at the upcoming Auto Expo 2018. The car has already been spotted undergoing road tests all across the country. But the latest update is that this time the facelifted Hyundai i20 will also carry a new automatic transmission. The car will get a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) gearbox and will be powered by a new 1.2L Kappa petrol engine. It is also confirmed that the company will discontinue its existing 1.4L petrol mill.

The outgoing 1.4L petrol engine of the i20 was primarily made for the European markets and was introduced in the year 2016 in India. But due to its high price tag, i.e. Rs. 9.15 lakh (Ex-showroom Delhi), the Indian car buyers did not show much interest in it. It is currently sold as the Magna variant and is Rs. 81,000 more expensive than Maruti Baleno’s Alpha CVT fully loaded trim.
The introduction of the new 1.2L petrol engine is a strategic move by Hyundai considering the projected auto-market growth in 2018 by 7 to 8 percent. This 1.2L petrol engine will also benefit the company in reducing the tax rate to 12.5 percent, which earlier with the 1.4L petrol mill was 24 percent. To mention, cars that are under 4 meters in length and have petrol motors under 1200cc get the benefit of the ‘small cars’ tax rate i.e. 12.5 percent. The reduced tax rate will allow Hyundai to introduce the i20 facelift at a competitive price.

In addition to the reduced price, the upcoming i20 1.2L petrol will also have an advantage of increased fuel efficiency with the CVT gearbox. Cosmetically, the facelifted i20 will get some tweaks such as a new cascade grille (like the New Verna) instead of the two-part grille, reworked bumpers, new headlamps, new alloy wheels and registration plate placement at the bootlid instead of the bumper.
