Which one is better? Mahindra Scorpio or XUV500. Read on
With the addition of a new automatic gearbox, Mahindra has upped the ante for the XUV500 with more premium and updated looks, a revised list of features and most importantly – a considerable update to its 2.2-litre engine, which has made the XUV500 more powerful and rich-looking than ever before. Needless to say, the XUV500 has served as a well-deserving flagship product for Mahindra and will continue to do so until a new, more premium product doesn’t come out of Mahindra’s brain-house.

However, if we dig into details further, it is not the XUV500 but it is the Scorpio that sells better in Tier-II and Tier-III cities. It means the volumes of Scorpio have been consistent all these years more than that of the XUV500. This is despite the fact that the Scorpio was updated not a long time ago. With the price difference between both of them not being wide enough, the Scorpio is still seen as a flagship product in most of the parts of the country despite being less premium than XUV500 in all parameters.
A competition brewing within the home, you ask? Which Is Better Scorpio or XUV500? To clarify, we compare the XUV500 as well as Scorpio and find out what are the major differences between the two:-
Exteriors
Take the first look of both the cars and you will instantly find that both these cars are vastly different from each other. While the XUV500 has a more aerodynamic approach in its design with a monocoque body, the Scorpio follows the more conventional boxy design with ladder-on-frame body.
Adding to it, the finer details and outer features such as larger chrome grille, sunroof, 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels and chrome garnish elements on window and tailgate and dual exhaust pipes make the XUV500 look more premium in comparison. However, projector headlamps with daytime running LEDs as well as LED tail lights are common to both.
Overall, while the design is purely subjective, the XUV500 looks posher and premium, while the Scorpio has that butch and intimidating appeal to it.
Interiors
Again, both the cars are poles apart, when you step inside them. The XUV500 pampers you with its plush cabin quality with tan and black leather upholstery, lounge lighting, piano black center console and soft-touch dashboard, all of which are missing in the somewhat utilitarian cabin of the Scorpio.
Adding to it, the XUV500 comes packed with a long list of comfort and convenience features such as Android Auto, Bluesense, Ecosense, Arkamys sound, smartwatch connectivity, side and curtain airbags, push-button start with keyless entry, telescopic steering, power foldable mirrors, ESP with rollover mitigation, hill hold and hill descent control and many more, which, again, are given a miss in the Scorpio.
Both the cars are stuffed with features to cater to the segment to which both of them belong, but it is the better quality and long list of features which makes the XUV500 a better place to be in.
Dimensions
While the XUV500 is longer and wider, the Scorpio is taller of the two. What this means is the Scorpio has more headroom, whereas the XUV500, with its longer wheelbase, offers you more legroom and shoulder room.
Also, the overall seating comfort of the XUV500 feels slightly better in comparison to the Scorpio. While both are equal in terms of city manoeuvrability with the same turning radius of 5.6m, the XUV500, with its bigger tank capacity provide you more tank range making it a better mile muncher.

Engine and Transmission
Both the cars coming out of Mahindra stable after BS6 update feature the same 2.2-litre mHawk Diesel engine. In the Scorpio, it produces 140 bhp of maximum power and 320Nm of max torque. The XUV500 too comes packed with the same 2.2 liter, mHawk155 Diesel Engine, however, it is here treated to 6th Generation Electronically Controlled Variable Geometry Turbocharger (eVGT), due to which it has better numbers to offer – 155bhp of maximum power and 360Nm of maximum torque.

Ride Quality
The rear suspension setup, as well as front braking setup of both the cars, is similar, however, the XUV500 comes with a more premium setup of McPherson type suspension at the front and disc brakes at the rear provide you more reassuring ride quality on all kinds of road. Adding to it, the monocoque body of the XUV500 translates into a much lesser amount of body roll over the ladder-on-frame body of the Scorpio making it a better handler of the two.
However, when the tough gets going, it is the Scorpio which performs slightly better, thanks to its stiffer suspension setup as well as higher ground clearance in comparison.

Price
While the base version of the Scorpio starts at Rs 80,000 lower than the XUV500’s, the top-spec of XUV 500 is almost Rs 3 lakh dearer than the Scorpios. However, it also gets an automatic option which is absent in the Scorpio. With the launch of the automatic transmission, the XUV 500 has dropped its variants from 11 to just 4.

Verdict
Clearly, the top-end XUV500 is almost Rs 2.93 lakh more expensive over the Scorpio, but considering the fact that it comes with more interior space, better seating comfort, plusher interiors, longer list of features, better safety, better on-road manners, better build quality and more powerful engine, the XUV500 feels much more upmarket over the Scorpio. Sure, the Scorpio has evolved a lot in all these years, and the current generation version is simply the best till date, but then, it still feels utilitarian and rough-edged when compared to XUV500. And considering the price bump which the new Scorpio has received, it simply has lost that value for money quotient which all the previous generations possessed. This helps the new XUV500 clearly emerge out as the better product out of the two.
