1. Mahindra XUV300

Mahindra XUV300 is a sophisticated sub-4-metre compact SUV which is a re-engineered and hotter version of Ssangyong’s Tivoli. This compact SUV gets many first-in-class features, but in its segment it is slightly expensive. It is available in diesel and petrol engine options and comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. An AMT version is also expected soon from Mahindra in the later part of the year.

When looked from outside, the XUV300 appears to be larger than its competitors. And inside, this compact SUV has a conventional dashboard with a premium look. Though the seat cushioning and cabin space are not as good as some of its rivals, but its sufficient width ensures that 5 occupants can sit comfortably. The compact SUV segment in India was ruled primarily by car makers such as Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Ford and Mahindra. And Hyundai, the second largest car manufacturer in the country was nowhere in the race of selling the compact SUVs. But, with the launch of Venue, Hyundai has lately made its debut in the compact SUV segment. This all new Hyundai Venue can be termed as the smaller version of the popular SUV, Hyundai Creta.

Hyundai has left no stone unturned in making the Venue an attractive budget SUV. Tata Nexon is a swanky sub-4-metre compact SUV which can be bought in multiple engine-gearbox options. On offer are the manual (petrol, diesel) and AMT (petrol, diesel) trims. Moreover, the Nexon also holds the distinction of being the first made in India car to get 5 stars for safety by Global NCAP. It looks fashionable, well proportioned and high on style. Tata Motors has done a wonderful job inside the car. The interior has been designed smartly to create more space, however, its cabins lack finesse. One can applaud Nexon’s suspension system as it absorbs bumps and potholes with ease. The car runs in control even at high speeds and can be purposeful enough for long tours.

4. Ford EcoSport

Ford EcoSport is a sub-4-metre compact SUV which has been around for a while and has been recently updated in 2017 with revised styling, fresh cabins and a new petrol engine. It is available in petrol (manual and AMT) and diesel (manual) trims, and is offered in a sporty turbo petrol variant. The petrol trims are offered with various power churning capabilities.

Both, inside as well as outside, the current EcoSport exhibits a sporty vibe. The only notable downside of this car is the road visibility hindrance, caused due to its thick A-pillars. Materials used inside won’t disappoint you, but the third occupant may feel squeezed at the rear seat.

The term Brezza can be interpreted as ‘breeze’ but this compact SUV has taken the market by storm. Maruti Suzuki Brezza has been a hit from the day of its launch despite not being offered in petrol version.
