2020 Hyundai i20 Launch in November First Week, Bookings Open

The third-generation premium hatch takes the style quotient a notch higher.

2020 Hyundai i20 Launch

To make your festive season more interesting, Hyundai is all set to launch the next-gen Elite i20 in India by the first week of the next month. From the spy shots surfing over the net, it’s clear that the upcoming iteration will feature aggressive styling reminiscent with the 2020 Hyundai Verna. Bookings for the same have commenced on select dealerships albeit unofficially at an upfront payment of Rs 25,000.

Design

The 2020 Hyundai Elite i20 will get a large trapezoidal grille flanked by a sleek pair of projector headlamps and fog lamps. The triangular fog lamp housing looks sharper. While the front appears aggressive, the rear gets a different design which may not be of everyone’s liking. It features horizontal heart-shaped tail lamps which are connected.

Just a thought – is connected tail lamps another trend fast catching up with India? The recently launched Kia Sonet has this.

From the sides, a sharp shoulder line flows from the front wheel fender till the rear door handles. Hyundai has intelligently added a D-pillar with cross-section glass area which makes it appear longer than it is.

There is a kink at the D-pillar with the extension of the tail lamps into the sides. The rear windshield is quite large and along with the tail lamps it reminds us of the Honda Brio.

The next-gen Elite i20 gets a simple and clean dashboard with the centre of attraction being the 10.25 inch touchscreen infotainment system. It is likely to have the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. Moreover, it features a Bose surround system, semi-digital instrument cluster, sunroof and the flat-bottom steering.

Similar to its other cars, the new i20 is likely to get BlueLink connected car tech to control features such as cabin pre-cool, start/stop, etc. Given the current breed of Korean cars, we expect the 2020 Elite i20 to offer wireless charging, air purifier (Kia Sonet offers this), climate control and many more features.

In terms of safety, dual airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child seats and rear parking sensors are expected to be kept standard across the range.

Engine options

The new Hyundai i20 will be borrowing the engines from the Hyundai Venue SUV. That said, it will come with three engine options along with the iMT transmission (clutchless drive). It will be equipped with a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol, 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines.

Prices

The all-new Hyundai Elite i20 is expected to start around Rs 6 lakh and go all the way up to Rs 8.50 lakh. For reference, the existing i20 is priced in the bracket of Rs 6.56 – 8.32 lakh (ex-showroom). Hyundai might employ the same strategy of selling two generations alongside with the i20 as seen in the Grand i10 and Nios’ case.

Competition

The next-gen i20 will be locking horns with the Honda Jazz, Maruti Baleno, Toyota Glanza and the Tata Altroz. Currently, Altroz is the only car to be sold in a diesel guise in the premium hatchback space. It would be interesting to see the sales of diesel Altroz’ once the diesel i20 is introduced.
