2021 Yamaha YZF-R15 launched in India, Gets A More Premium R15M Variant Too
Yamaha has brought in a majorly revived model of YZF-R15 in the Indian two-wheeler market. The fourth-generation Yamaha YZF-R15 V4.0 now features a completely revised front end design, a host of additional features and minor tweaks to the powertrain. The new Yamaha YZF-R15 range now starts at Rs 1.67 lakh (ex-showroom), and also features a new more premium R15M variant.
2021 Yamaha YZF-R15: Variants and Prices
The new Yamaha YZF-R15 4.0 now comes in two different variants – R15 Standard and R15M, the prices for which are as follows:
- Yamaha YZF-R15 – Rs 1.67 lakh (Colour options – Racing Blue, Metallic Red and Dark Knight)
- Yamaha YZF-R15M – Rs 1.77 lakh (Colour options – Metallic Grey and MotoGP edition)
Currently, the R15 has no direct competition, but given its specs and pricing, it takes on KTM RC 125 head-on.
2021 Yamaha YZF-R15: Design and Features
The new Yamaha YZF-R15 now features a heavily redone front fairing design. It has been restyled and now accommodates a centrally placed dual functioning LED projector bulb instead of the sleeker LED lights of the previous models. The headlamp is now flanked with slim daytime running LEDs. This whole front fascia of the updated R15 now looks in line with that of the internationally available YZF-R7.
The tail section of the new Yamaha YZF-R15 has been minutely revised, which now features larger air ducts. Apart from that, the rest of the design of the motorcycle remains the same as the outgoing R15 V3.0. The additional changes in the R15M variant are blue-coloured alloy wheels and different looking seat covers.
The new R15, in both variants, gets a completely new full LCD instrument console, the layout of which is similar to that of the flagship YZF-R1. The unit has two display modes – Street and Track. While the Street mode shows average mileage, average speed, coolant temperature and battery power, the Track mode reads out the latest and fastest lap times. The instrument console is also compatible with Yamaha’s new Y-Connect Smartphone application and Bluetooth compatibility.
Other features on the motorcycle include assist and slipper clutch and side stand engine cut-off. Additional features in the R15M include traction control and quick-shifter.
2021 Yamaha YZF-R15: Engine and Gearbox
Both the new variants of the Yamaha YZF-R15 get the same four-stroke, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, 155cc engine of the outgoing model, which gets segment-first variable valve actuation. However, the performance figures have seen minute revisions. The peak power now stands at 18.3 bhp @ 10,000 rpm, which is 0.3 bhp lesser than what the R15 V3.0 used to make. However, the peak torque output remains unchanged at 14.2 Nm @ 7,500 rpm. The engine is paired to a 6-speed gearbox as before.
2021 Yamaha YZF-R15: Chassis
With the new YZF-R15, Yamaha finally has equipped the motorcycle with upside-down hydraulic telescopic forks at the front. However, the Deltabox frame and linked-type rear monoshock remain the same as before. The motorcycle continues to come equipped with a 282mm front disc brake and 220mm rear disc brake, with dual-channel ABS as standard.
