While the infrastructure for electric cars still has a long way to go in India, the faster pace of adoption of electric cars in India is a signal that the country is gradually readying for a wider acceptance of EVs. It all started with Tata Motors making a foray into the all-electric compact car category with the Tigor EV, and today, the space is slowly heating up, witnessing more competition with the arrival of newer electric cars.

With the era of diesel-powered compact cars coming to an end, people are gradually shifting to electric cars, especially those who are living in bigger cities with a decent spread of charging stations and mostly do intra-city commutes. Here are the five most affordable electric cars, which can be an alternative pick for those who wish to buy a traditional petrol or diesel compact car in today’s times:

MG Comet EV

Since its launch, the MG Comet EV has become the most affordable electric car to be sold in India – a title it still holds. This city-friendly electric car has a funky-looking design, which might not be to everyone’s taste, but it grabs a lot of attention owing to its uniqueness. However, premium features like all-LED lighting and a dual-screen TFT cockpit behind the steering wheel make it look modern. Also, the two-door design and compact dimensions make it a breeze to drive and park in urban driving conditions. However, the restricted range and small 12-inch wheels don’t make it too recommendable for longer highway journeys.

Tata Tiago EV

Tata Motors has made an impact with the Tiago.EV due to its compact dimensions and proven track record of the “Tiago” nameplate, making it the highest-selling electric car on sale today. Based on the petrol-powered version of the Tiago, the Tata Tiago.EV is being offered in two versions – Medium Range and Long Range, which are well-differentiated by their motor and battery setups along with features on board. Another fresh product in the all-electric compact hatchback space is the Citroen eC3. While the eC3 might not be churning up volumes as high as Tiago.EV comes across as a fresher, more rugged-looking and more stylish offering in an almost similar price range. Available in two variants, with optional add-ons in the more premium Feel variant, the Citroen eC3 is decently equipped with essentials like daytime running LEDs, fog lamps, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a tilt-adjustable steering wheel with audio controls.

Tata Tigor EV

The Tigor.EV was the very first attempt by Tata Motors in the electric vehicle space, and over the years, the compact electric sedan has seen minor updates, keeping it afresh in the competition. The only compact sedan offered in an all-electric guise is the Tata Tigor.EV shares its platform and electric motor with the Tiago.EV, but gets a slightly bigger battery pack, which returns almost the same maximum range as the Tiago.EV. Also, like the Tiago.EV, the Tigor.EV also comes equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, projector headlamps with LED DRLs, leather upholstery, cruise control and 8-speaker audio system, along with additional features like rain sensing wipers and rear centre armrest.

Tata Nexon EV

Tata Motors has changed the game in the electric mobility space with the Nexon.EV, with it becoming much more modern and feature-packed with the most recent facelift it has received. The new Nexon.EV is offered in two versions – Medium Range and Long Range, both of which get different motor and battery combinations for their variants. With the recent update, the new Tata Nexon.EV has become much more feature-packed, with new-age features like all-LED illumination with welcome and departure lights, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10.25-inch full-TFT instrument console, a wireless charger, ventilated front seats, sunroof, Arcade.EV with plenty of in-car entertainment features, leather upholstery, six airbags and much more.
