BMW’s extensive range of car showcases at the ongoing Indian Auto Expo has had another addition, the BMW i3 hatchback. The carmaker has not confirmed when the car will be launched in India, but it is currently on sale in the American, European and other international markets.
The exteriors of the Hybrid hatchback gets the iconic BMW kidney grille with a glossy black finish, LED headlamps, 20-inch lightweight alloy wheels, suicide doors and a glass B-pillar. The LED treatment can also be found on the taillights of the electric hatchback.

Step inside the cabin and we find a 10.25-inch high definition infotainment system and a 5.7-inch TFT colour instrument cluster. The touchscreen also doubles as the display for BMW i3’s iDrive connected drive display. The infotainment system also comes with Apple CarPlay but the incorporation of Android Auto has not been confirmed. The safety features on the BMW i3 include dynamic traction control, reversing camera, park assist, active cruise control and dynamic stability control.
Powering the BMW i3 hatchback is a 184PS, 33 KWH electric motor. The car comes with a driving range of 280km and can accelerate from 0-100kmph in just 6.9 seconds. The driving range can be further extended with the range extender which uses an onboard petrol engine to recharge the lithium-ion batteries. The Indian government if pushing for all-electric mobility by the year 2030 and BMW along with other automakers like Mercedes-Benz and Audi have partnered to set up fast-charging points globally. Considering this we expect the hatchback will soon hit the Indian streets and might be offered as a completely built unit import initially. The prices are likely to start around Rs. 35 Lakh.
