The competition between the C-segment cars has always been combative. While Honda City and Hyundai Verna have always been on the forefront of the competition, the late entrant in the segment, the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz has been snatching a chunk of the sales for a long time now. Honda City got updated with the diesel engine back in January 2014 while Hyundai, the South- Korean automaker recently introduced the 5th generation of its C-Segment sedan Verna. In order to keep the car in pace with competition and maintain keep the sales register active, the all-new Verna has been recently launched in the market which is much better and much bigger than the predecessor. In terms of cost, Hyundai Verna has been priced very cleverly, making it most value for money offering in its class. The base price of Verna is quite low because it comes with minimal features. Maruti Suzuki Ciaz is the most affordable model in the price comparison with a spacious cabin and efficient engines, but this sedan ranks low in the features list. Honda City is the most expensive with numerous advanced features.

Under the hood, diesel option is available in all the three models. Hyundai Verna has the most powerful engine compared to the other two. Hyundai has offered 1.6 litre turbocharged mill in the new variant while the older version also features 1.4 litre engine, so with this oil burner, the Verna proves to be the most powerful and torquiest car. Maruti Ciaz wins in terms of efficiency with the jaw-dropping 28.9 kmpl. Another exception in Verna here is that it’s the only car offering diesel automatic variant.

Just like the diesel one, Hyundai Verna stands out in petrol comparison as well. It offers the largest petrol engine with power/torque and thus, least in terms of fuel efficiency. Honda City is available with CVT transmission that makes the ride smoother while the Ciaz wins the efficiency battle again with the petrol trim.
Exterior Comparison
Talking about the looks, Honda City is provided with an all-new front facia. The car is based on company’s new design philosophy and gets LED headlamps along with LED DRLs, stylish R16 diamond cut alloy wheels and auto-folding door mirror. Rear part gets LED combi tail lamps, trunklid spoiler with LED stop lamp and shark fin antenna.
Maruti Ciaz has wonderful design approach with long creases all over the body. The front is bestowed with a large trapezoidal grille with chrome accents. It gets projector headlamps, strong shoulder line and flared wheel arches. At the rear, the car features larger bumper, standard wrap-around tail lamps and rides on attractive 16 spoke alloy wheels.
The 2017 Hyundai Verna is inspired by its sibling Elantra. Keeping with the trend, the front is bestowed with projector headlamps, LED DRLs with accented grille and continues to have coupish sloping roofline. Coming to the rear, the car boasts of LED tail lamps same as in sibling Elantra, while the shark fin antenna is inspired from Hyundai Creta.

On the dimension front, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz retains the highest position, it’s the biggest among other cars in terms of measurement. The extra width, length as well as wheelbase offers a lot of cabin space which the City and Verna are not able to match. Hyundai Verna is quite big as compared to its older version; overall length is increased by 65 mm, wheelbase is added by 30 mm while the width is increased by 29 mm. Honda City is the tallest of the lot while Hyundai Verna lags behind in terms of luggage space with a 30 litre deficit over the City and the Ciaz.

All the three cars stand equally in terms of gadgetry, but Maruti Ciaz misses out on some of the key features. Honda City after getting facelift in the mid February 2017 has pushed up into a league of its own in the segment. In Hyundai Verna, most of the best features are reserved for the top end variants only. Overall, if you are the one looking for some extra goodies in your car, then both City and Verna won’t dissatisfy you.
Verdict
So with the all new avatar, Hyundai Verna seems to shake up the status quo with the new powerful mill. The Ciaz tops the charts in terms of space and fuel efficiency while Honda City remains hot favourite in terms of features. While taking on the arch nemesis Honda City and Maruti Ciaz was not an easy job, but still Hyundai has clearly done its homework in giving Verna the needed strength to fight against the duo.
