After infinite sightings of its test mules, the new Mahindra Scorpio is finally inching towards its launch in India. A sample of the new model was recently spied in a fully camouflaged form being shipped to another country, which indicates that it has been sent for Global NCAP crash tests.
Unlike the current-generation model, the Mahindra Scorpio new model for 2022 will be a revolutionary product, which will grounds-up an all-new SUV. Following are some of the details which are now confirmed through various sightings of test mules, and will grace the new version of the Scorpio:
Will continue to have a ladder-on-frame architecture
Like the current version, the new Mahindra Scorpio will sit on a ladder-on-frame chassis. It indicates that the new version will also have a robust and unbreakable feel, which is a trait of ladder-on-frame utility vehicles.
Will have an all-new design
The last iterations of the Mahindra Scorpio have always been evolutionary models of the first-ever version of the SUV. However, this new model is a ground-up new SUV, having a completely new design that will look much more stylish and contemporary than ever before. Going by the spy pictures, the new model will get features like LED projector headlamps and dual-functioning daytime running LEDs, 17-inch machined alloy wheels, roof rails and LED tail lamps.
Will be bigger than the current model
While Mahindra has not revealed the dimensions of the upcoming Scorpio, the test mules indicate that the new model will be bigger than the current version of the SUV. The upcoming version looks like a longer and taller SUV compared to the current version, while the width is also expected to be more.
Will have a completely new interior
While the interior layout and fit and finish levels of the current Scorpio feel utilitarian, the same for the new upcoming Scorpio looks much fresher, premium and up-to-date, if the spy pictures of the interior of the new Scorpio are anything to go by. The new model has been spied with a dual-tone black and brown leather upholstery, with an all-new dashboard layout having modern bits like a larger touchscreen infotainment system having vertical AC vents on its sides and a cluster of buttons for the audio system and climate control below it. Even the flat-bottom steering wheel and instrument console are all new, with the latter having an analogue layout and not a full-TFT screen like that in the XUV700.
Will get a new seating layout
The current version of the Scorpio features front-facing first and second rows and jump seats facing sideways in the third row. However, the Mahindra Scorpio new model for 2022 will come with a front-facing arrangement for the third row as well. The new Scorpio will be offered with a seven-seater configuration with a three-row arrangement as standard, however, the captain seating arrangement for the second row might be provided as an option in the top-spec variants.
Will have a much longer list of features
Mahindra has left no stone unturned in making the new Scorpio a much more modern and urban SUV on the inside. For this, the Mahindra Scorpio new model of 2022 will come with comfort and convenience features like a touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, tilt and telescopic adjustable steering wheel with audio, Bluetooth, voice commands and cruise control buttons, push start-stop button, roof-mounted speakers for the audio system, leather upholstery and electric sunroof. Even in terms of safety, the new version of the Scorpio will get six airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, electronic stability control, traction control, hill hold assist, hill descent control, and reverse parking sensors with camera and more. It might also feature some of the ADAS features, which are available in the new XUV700.
Will have a new petrol engine
While the current version of the Mahindra Scorpio is available as a diesel-only model, the new upcoming version of the SUV will be offered with a choice of a petrol engine. For the new Scorpio, Mahindra will retain the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine from the XUV700, though in a different state of tune. The petrol-powered Scorpio will be offered with both 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission choices.
Will have a revised diesel engine too
The current-generation Mahindra Scorpio is powered by a 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, which puts up 140 PS of power and 320 Nm of torque. For the new upcoming version of the Scorpio, Mahindra will retain the 2.2-litre diesel engine, but in a different and more powerful state of tune. It is expected that the engine with a revised state of tune will pump out 154 PS of power and 360 Nm of torque. The engine in this state of tune is already available under the hood of the base-spec MX3 variant of the diesel version of XUV700. Also, the new Scorpio will be available with both 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmissions.
Will be launched in the third quarter of 2022
The COVID-19 outbreak and shortage of semiconductor chips have already delayed the launch of Mahindra Scorpio’s new model for 2022. The new model is now expected to arrive finally in the Indian showrooms in the third quarter of 2022. Like how the Thar was unveiled in 2020 and XUV700 in 2021, the new Scorpio might also be unveiled globally on 15th August.
